Spending Habits
With the Patriots losing the Superbowl last night, a lot of New Englanders went back to work Monday feeling a little blue and bleary eyed. I myself, felt a little blue in the tummy. Having eaten quite a number of artery-clogging snacks, I must have done a number to my belly, not to mention my wallet… the first casualty of the evening.
One can not help but realize that the Superbowl is big business. Myriads of companies rush out to plunk down chunks of money to book primetime ad slots. Whatever the big corporations paid for this time, probably had no impact on the sales. In my opinion, 80% of the ads were surprisingly below par this time around. Has someone tightened up the cash flow on ad development and creativity? One cannot help but wonder.
I mean, come on! Who wants to watch a sketch of a man pushing a big rock up a slope for close to 30 seconds only to find out that it’s an ad for the new GMC hybrid truck? Where have you guys hidden the monkeys?
Then, there are companies that anticipate gaining a lot in sales, such as Domino’s Pizza (33% gains) and Papa John’s (50% gains) than any other given Sunday. That’s absolutely astounding! Why is that so? One analyst believes that pizza is convenient, and economical. As eating has become as important as the sport itself. Domino’s has even gone high-tech, by allowing consumers track their pie status so consumers will know when they would have to peel themselves away from the game.
On the other hand, there are individuals who look to make a quick buck through gambling. Office pools can be harmless, betting $5 per square. One can go overboard and bet on all squares… but that’s another story. But, there are those who take gambling to a very different and “professional” level, such as betting big in Vegas. I do not agree on these kinds of gambling, and I think, that it’s silly for those who do this, but cannot afford to in the first place. Sure, those who win, can win astronomical amounts. However, for the unlucky ones, they may lose their life savings, homes, or sadly, even their lives.
Conclusion : Money CAN be the root of all evil….
