Nuts about Starbucks

1-31-08_Nuts_Starbucks_165Newbury.jpgBoston gets cold in the winter. So cold that I often want to curl up in bed, turn on the TV and do nothing.

The weather this morning wasn’t much different than any other winter mornings that I’ve experienced so far. It had stayed below freezing for weeks. The weather man on TV confirms that the temperature will stay low all through the day.

This morning wasn’t any different than any other mornings. I do have a hard time waking up and getting out of bed; so much so, that one would say that I have a condition to late rising. As I struggled out of bed and got ready to head out, I wondered groggily what my day was going to be, what I had to accomplish and who I had to meet.

I had never envisioned though, that today would involve meeting a squirrel, with what seems to be a craving for caffeine!

It all happened so quickly.

I was making my way back to work when I saw something rustling the bushes. At first, I thought it might have been a little dog looking for its chew toy. But, with a few quick jumps, this thing hopped onto the railings and then into the bushes. I was a little surprised, as it appears that I now have a squirrel in my company.

“This squirrel is pretty far from the Public Gardens,” I thought to myself.

“I wonder what it’s doing around here….”

“Maybe it lives in the Comm Ave Mall….”

Whatever it was, I was curious.

I headed across the road to give the squirrel some space, so it could do whatever it was preparing to act out, as it seemed determined. I am definitely not going to want to stand in its way if it decides to jump out and bite me! If I get bitten, I’ll have to have rabies shots – and I’m a chicken with shots; let alone rabies shots. I wasn’t planning on having any of that!

I observed the critter from the other side of the street. It was slowly making its way to the top of the bush.

Then, as suddenly as it hopped onto the railings – it popped its head out.

Sniffing at the air, it was looking practically at anyone who was heading in or out of this one specific Starbucks, at 165 Newbury Street. Its beady eyes, mischievously observing its surroundings like a maniac; just like how all squirrels do. It also seemed to be hyperventilating: its breathing, quick and shallow.

But, what I was most surprised about, was its actions – the way it started gesturing at Starbucks customers. Its paws grabbed at the air, its head moved up and down, tail flickering in the wind! It looked as if it was saying,

“Coffee fo’ me? Coffee fo’ me?”

The only explanation for this might have been that the poor squirrel had developed a taste for expensive coffee from some leftover frappuccino found in the park. This squirrel not only had high taste, it had an addiction! If I were close enough, I was sure that I would be able to see that it had been drooling.

I stayed as it decided to come out from its temporary hiding place. It boldly headed up toward the glass doors of Starbucks. As it glanced at the doors, its head held up high. I imagined how intently it must be observing the baristas create the delicious, sweetened, caffeinated, addictive concoctions. The squirrel must have been hoping that some of that would head toward its way… poor little guy.

With its paws off the ground again, it stared right up and looked up at the sign. I must say, that it definitely looked peculiar seeing an animal take in a sign so intently, as if it were reading. It somehow must be making a mental note in its head….

“Czar-bux…”

As quickly as it appeared, it disappeared – turned around and ran down the street, turning onto Dartmouth. Something must have frightened it.

And just like that, my afternoon entertainment was gone!

I walked back to work, feeling sad for the little guy. I hope that it would be able to find some other type of warmth rather than the evil richness of coffee, and for once, hibernate peacefully through the winter.

This article is created with the intent of introducing Nuts the Squirrel, who is obsessed with coffee (non other than Starbucks coffee) and whipped cream. Look out for more Nuts on Fridays.

Coffee is not evil. Coffee is a friend. It might be a commodity more important than petrol…

Boin888… Hmm, not bad, not bad at all. I found some interesting niche games that I hadn’t seen elsewhere. Payouts were smooth, no hassle. Worth a look if you’re bored with the usual. boin888
